Carla's Old Heart...

Yesterday, before Carla's Physical Therapy appointment, we were able the meet with the pathologist at Children's to view Carla's old, dissected heart.  Carla was adamant about wanting to see her old heart.  Afterwards she said it looked kind of scary, like a skeleton.  But, she wasn't afraid.  She was just hoping it would look more pink.  I was  hoping it would too, but alas, it has been preserved, so it is more of a tan color.  I guess I wasn't expecting it to be cut up into four or more pieces, but it was still cool to see.  After seeing what sorry shape her old heart was in, I am glad more than ever that she has her new heart.

So, without further ado...  Here she is...

The big hole on  the top left side of this photo is actually the right ventricle.  That white part actually has a moving part that is one of valves.  On the right side of the photo you can see that the left ventricle is very small  and pretty much unformed....now we see why it wasn't very helpful to her little body!  The outside of the heart walls should be very thin, and here you can see that hers were actually pretty thick.  This is from both her heart having to work so hard, and from it becoming damaged and forming scar tissue.

This is the outside of the heart... the small hole at the bottom is the aorta  and the large hole the right ventricle again.  On the outside of the heart you can see fatty or scar tissue... This, again,  is because the heart was having to work too hard and becoming damaged.

Another picture of the outside of the heart.

This is the other part of the right ventricle that they had cut open.

Pretty interesting.  I know one thing, I am glad she has a perfect new heart beating inside her now, instead of this poor little battered thing.  We are so blessed.

Love, Jen

Wow that is unbelievable! God must have really helped that heart keep working! Not that I ever doubted that but it's more confirmed now!
A miracle!!!
